What would you like to know?

When designed and applied correctly, floating or gravity based liquefaction facilities (FLNG) present many advantages over traditional onshore solutions, including;

  • • Lower cost per ton of LNG production
  • • Faster time to first production
  • • Simpler execution in a controlled environment
  • • Lower risk profile
  • • Ability to redeploy to a new location

FLNG can be applied nearshore or at-shore instead of onshore solutions, and offshore for stranded and associated gas so it has a wider potential range of application for producing LNG compared to onshore solutions.

There are many alternative liquefaction technologies available, however not all are suitable for application in a marine and/or floating environment. Typically, most developments evaluate and select between Single Mixed Refrigerant (SMR), N2 Cycles or Dual Mixed Refrigerant (DMR) processes. All three are possible to be applied successfully for FLNG, however present significant differences in benefits and weaknesses, which must be considered to the development’s specific requirements for the correct technology to be selected.

As with offshore oil and gas production, FLNG is not simply putting an onshore solution onto a platform in the ocean. The solutions must be designed considering and be suitable for operations in a marine environment. While ensuring as low a weight and footprint as possible due to CAPEX requirements balanced with a safe design is also crucial as the escape possibilities are different offshore than onshore.

Although onshore technologies and solutions may be suitable in some cases, the knowledge of how to apply them correctly for FLNG is critical to have a fit for purpose design that is also cost effective.

FLNG solutions are able to be very cost competitive when done correctly, competing and often winning compared to onshore solutions. The actual figure per ton of LNG production is dependent on the project’s specifics, for example deep water offshore LNG production is typically more expensive than nearshore and at-shore LNG production due to different interfaces and often different feed gas and field characteristics. Different technology choices also have impact to the CAPEX of a facility.

From our experience FLNG can achieve cost ranges from 400 USD/ton LNG up to 900 USD/ton LNG.

LNG Industry Magazine – May 2017 – “LNG is Dead, Long Live (F)LNG.”

For mid-scale (0.5MTPA up to 1.5MTPA per train of liquefaction) and small scale (< 0.5MTPA of LNG production), standardised solutions do exist from various suppliers, including for Aragon’s ODEC and ODECLITE technologies. The appeal of such solutions is the improved cost compared to bespoke designs and faster execution time. For large production levels, our studies and projects have shown that multiple trains of mid-scale production present many benefits over traditional large scale production based on large single trains of liquefaction.

To efficiently and effectively identify whether it is cost effective to redeploy an FPSO it is necessary to understand the topside capacity and marine constraints and opportunities, required modification, compliance with new and old specifications and regulations and life extension requirements of the whole facility (hull and topsides) in combination with the new field holistically. Experience in such projects is important to be able to identify the critical areas unique to a facility being redeployed.

Using a partner, such as Aragon, who has experience in FPSO redeployment, greenfield and brownfield projects and who can take responsibility for the entire vessel (topsides and hull) makes all the difference from early phase evaluation through to design and execution for the modification of the vessel thanks to our integrated working approach with our partner companies, LMG Marin and Sembcorp Marine.

There are many different alternatives that are well proven for regasification, including;

  • • Open Cycle using direct sea water or with an intermediate fluid
  • • Closed Cycle using for example steam
  • • Ambient Air Vapourisers
  • • Open Rack Vapourisers
  • • Submerged Combustion Vapourisers

However, depending on the specifics of the project (such as ambient conditions and regulatory requirements or limitations), and the solution selected (floating facility, gravity-based, onshore), not all technologies are suitable or ideal. It is important to consider the development as a whole to ensure that the correct solution for regasification is selected to ensure reliable operations and a cost-effective solution.

FSRU Guide—What are the important questions?

FSRUs are LNG carriers with additional regasification and send out systems, they have in recent years become somewhat standardised due to some operators ordering vessels based on speculation to offer clients faster execution to first gas.

However, each final location is different with respect to metocean data and client/ regional requirements and regulations, so care must be taken during design.

Although the regasification systems available are relatively standard, it is important not to forget that it is a hazardous system with hydrocarbons and high-pressure gas, so the solution selection, arrangement and application must be done correctly to ensure compliance with safety requirements and to ensure consistent and reliable operations. Understanding process safety and class requirements is critical. By understanding the systems there is also fully possible to optimise the solution by integrating with other systems and as such optimise the energy efficiency of the unit.

All in all FSRUs are a high capital and complex facility and so should not be treated as an off the shelf solution.

FSRUs are a well proven option but are not the only solution available on the market. FSRUs are well suited to large regasification rates and so are often not suitable for smaller requirements.

There are multiple alternatives to FSRUs such as gravity based solutions and floating regasification units/vessels (FRU / FRV) which present benefits compared to FSRUs especially considering lower regasification rates.

To produce quickly and at low cost a standardised solution is the best approach. In addition to this a partner, such as Aragon, who can offer a complete delivery of the process plant to simplify execution is of high importance.

Low cost LNG production also needs to consider operations complexity and associated costs, and so selection of the right technology is critical.
